The C-ster's First Camping Trip

We decided that it was time the C-ster went on a camping trip.  Not knowing how it would go, we decided to visit Wall Doxey State Park in the Holly Springs National Forest.  It is close enough to home that if things didn't go well or it rained too much we could go home at any time.  As it turned out, the C-ster did great!  It took him about an hour to fall asleep, but he slept well through the night.  He woke up five or six time crying, but with a couple pats on the back and a little humming he went right back to sleep.  Trial mission completed.  The C-ster is now ready for a more extended trip or a trip with friends!

In the morning Cheryl made some bacon on eggs on the propane Coleman stove that we got for Christmas.  Mmm mmm good!  The C-ster and I got to explore our surroundings a bit, and we took down camp.
The C-sters favorite game - "Dad, I stole your hat!"
The new stove, and Cheryl enjoying a delicious breakfast.
The C-ster and I on a walk.  You can't start them too young.  I'm hoping
that he will be my backpacking partner for many years to come.
Wall Doxey State Park also a has a 62 acre spring fed lake.  As I helped Cheryl into the kayak I immediately noticed numerous bluegill and a few small largemouth in the crystal-clear-for-Mississippi lake.  Cheryl fished for a couple hours while I put the C-ster down for a nap, and then I fished for a couple hours.  We got skunked.  I had one largemouth on for a few seconds on a Woolly Bugger / Autumn Splendor fly that I am prototyping for our big trip in a couple weeks.  That was it.  Fishing is about location, location, location, and I don't think that I have found the correct location yet here in Mississippi.  I'll keep exploring.

  1. When Jay and I went there we had decent luck on poppers. We only fished there once but we liked it. Our favorite fishing in the "area" was still in Arkansas at the Spring River, which is about two and a half hour away, but a good time if you have the time.

    1. Thanks for the reply Kelly. The only person that I talked to that had caught fish caught them on poppers. Cheryl tried for about an hour and a half with one, but didn't have any luck. We too love the Spring River. We actually went there last month (did alright), but I didn't post about it. The distance makes it a bit tricky, and we are always trying to figure out what to do about the baby's nap schedule.

We will be spending Memorial Day weekend in Cotter, Arkansas. I am planning on fishing primarily Crooked Creek, as I'm dying to catch some decent smallies. I'll be sure to post my results either way.
